International Guitar Festival Fribourg
September 23. - October 2, 2011

Organisation: Association guitare passion, cp 126, CH-1709 Fribourg - Suisse Français Deutsch English

This year's opening concert is something of a novelty: Gérald Zbinden on the electric guitar. The musician from Fribourg, heir among others to Hendrix and Gilmour, conjures up the smoky atmospheres of the psychedelic years. Yet there is no trace of nostalgia in this decidedly contemporary artist with his curious machines. He will be joined in the second part of the concert by the singer Emilie Lesbros

With Gilbert-Michel Rolle we turn towards the United States. The tenor from Fribourg left his homeland at an early age to go to San Francisco, where he evolved in the world of lyrical music. He has now been living in New York for several years and is an authority on the American repertoire. For this concert he will be accompanied by Benjamin Bunch, an American guitarist living in Switzerland. This former student of Oscar Giglia specializes in accompanying vocal artists.

The Barocco Guitar Duet is made up of two teachers from the Morges Conservatory, Claudio Glave and Michel Borgne. The two baroque enthusiasts will play their own arrangements of pieces from the period of Johann Sebastian Bach. They will also perform the world premiere of Michel Borgne's creation for two guitars, «Polarités«.

Laurent Boutros is French, but his music is deeply influenced by his Armenian roots. His recent recording, «Une guitare en Arménie», entices us with its soundscapes and evocative place names from the Caucasus - Ararat, Tiflis, Caspienne, Marmara. His trio ensemble will take us to the frontiers of world music.

A Basque guitarist? Yes - Angel Unzu. Although solidly anchored in classical guitar, he is also curious about jazz and the folk music from his area of San Sebastian. The result is music both lively and intimate played on the nylon string guitar as well as on the flat-top. Not to be missed!

Women flamenco guitarists are a rarity, and yet Laura Gonzalez is coming to Fribourg, radiating charm, technical virtuosity and subtlety. A former Paco Serrano student, she plays a modern flamenco that becomes her young age. For this unusual flamenco evening, she is accompanied by a second guitar and percussions.

Lucio Nuñez is back. The festival audience has twice had the opportunity to hear this exceptional guitarist over the last twenty years. Born in 1938, musically nurtured by Segovia and Yepes, he excells in the interpretation of works by Villa Lobos, Barrios, Turina, Tedesco, Torroba... A definite highlight.
