Born in Havana in 1956, Eduardo Martín began studying the guitar in 1971 with Vicente Martínez. In 1975, he entered the National School of Instructors of Art where he studied with Dagoberto Arguiz. Three years later, in 1978, he encountered Ángel Vázquez Millares, with whom he studied music history, as well as morphology and musical analysis during the rest of his academic studies. He notably studied guitar with Antonio Rodríguez, counterpoint with Armando Rodríguez and harmony with Enrique Belver. He also studied guitar with Isaac Nicola, Rey Guerra, Leo Brouwer, David Russel, Wolfgang Lendle, Costa Cotsiolis, Ichiro Suzuki, Antonio Lauro and Alirio Díaz.
In 1982, he composed the theme for Sirio Soto Junior's piece El acotejo, performed by the Cubana de acero under the direction of Albio Paz. In 1984 and 1985, he toured Cuba, Nicaragua and France with the National Choir of Cuba, where he played as a back-up guitarist under the direction of Digna Guerra. In 1985, they recorded the album Date una vueltecita for the label Egrem.
In 1985, he gratuated at the ISA (Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba) and was selected as to play as a soloist with the National Center of Concert with whom he frequently toured in years to come. In 1987, together with Rey Guerra, Carlos Alberto Lloró and Walfrido Domínguez, he formed the guitar quatuor Guitarra 4, which was awarded the grand jury prize at the Concours National de Musique de Chambre, professional category, in 1989.
In 1990, he founded the Duo Confluencia with Walfrido Domínguez. Together, they recorded with different labels and for various radio and television stations in several countries. They garnered much praise from the specialised press both in Europe and in the United States. Together with Pavel Urquiza, he composed the music for the documentary Adrenaline, produced by the Cuban Institute of Art and Film Industry in 1991. The same year, he became the first Latin American composer to be honored at the Concours International de Guitare de Radio-France in Paris. In 1995, he joined the Imaginary Quartet, with Francisco Gamallo and Ignacio López (Spain), as well as Walfrido Domínguez (Cuba). Together with this quatuor, he gave several recitals and recorded in Spain, Argentina and Cuba. In 1999, the American Composer's Orchestra of New York named him compositeur délégué for the Festival Sounds of the America.
He has frequently toured Cuba, Latin America and Europe, and given numerous recitals, seminaries and master classes in Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Today, his music is included in the official teaching programme for different levels in several countries: Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Turkey, Spain, France, Austria and the United States. It is also part of the compulsory programme in several international competitions.
Eduardo Martín currently teaches guitar at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba, while leading an active life as a concert artist.
