Born in Bensberg, near Cologne, Hubert Käppel is one of the rare German guitarists to have attainted international fame. Following studies at the Cologne Music Academy, he perfected his knowledge of the instrument with Konrad Ragossnig at the Basel Music Academy, and with Oscar Ghiglia in Sienne and Gargnano (IT). In 1978, he won the third Concorso Internazionale di Interpretazione in Gargnano.
After having recorded J.S. Bach's 6th Klavierpartita, he embarked on a tour with orchestras and chamber music ensembles that lead him through all of Europe, the USA, Canada, Africa, Japan, Brasil, Mexico, Russia and Asia.
Today, Hubert Käppel is the director of one of Europe's most brilliant guitar classes in Cologne, hothouse for numerous international contest prize-winners. In 2001, he co-founded the Koblenz Guitar Academy with composer Georg Schmitz, so as to support and to encourage young local guitar talents.
Hubert Käppel is one of the most influential professor and guitarist of of his generation. In 2004, the organisation board of the Koblenz Guitar Contest renamed the event after the great musician: the Koblenz International Guitar Competition Hubert Käppel.
One of the most sought-for professors in universities, conservatoires, as well as music and guitar festivals both in Germany and abroad, he regularly teaches in institutions such as the Yale University, the San Francisco and Boston music academies, the Manhattan School of Music, the music academies of Stockholm, Malmö, Arvika and Oslo, as well as in Israel, Canada, Taiwan, Singapore, Greece, Spain and Brazil.
Between 1991 and 1999, Hubert Käppel worked as the artistic director of the International Guitar Festival Frechen/Cologne. In 2000, he stepped in as artistic director of the International Guitar Festival Gevelsberg.
In 1996, Brühl Editions published Käppels Gitarrenshule, a vast manual for teaching guitar, including a CD, for beginners and advanced students.
Käppel is the also the author of numerous recordings for radio, television, as well as CDs and records with labels Zweitausendeins, GSP/Francisco, FSM/Exaudio and MARA-Records.
